This may be a stupid question as I have not worked on commercial VPNs for many
years, but what recovery mechanism would the VPN tunnel be using. Most VPN's
I was aware of just encapsulate the traffic in a tunnel and provided no
additional error recovery services. Is this a common feature?

But they don't tunnel with TCP and they can have their own
buffer/retransmission methods. That's not to say that VPNs aren't
susceptible to packet loss, but they can add a layer of resiliency to
an otherwise broken link layer.<br>
