If traffic classification happens at the ends then equivalent e2e
solutions are (relatively) trivial (in comparison to distributing
the classification throughout the network itself, the thrust of
the para David quoted).
Enterprise customers may find mid-network classification tools
attractive because they have a centralized-control mindset. And
no-one's been offering them a useful[*] (and equivalently easy to
deploy) architecture that pushes classification out towards the
edges.

[*] note, not the same as 'unlimited scalability'. A constrained
RSVP-like e2e signaling solution might have helped head off mid-net
'deep classification' schemes if we weren't so bloody-mindedly opposed
to e2e signaling.
