There has been an awful lot of misinformation and partial information
in this discussion.  It revealed how little people appreciate the
enormous influence of DARPA over the years.

I suggest that people should read:

about the history of the Internet.

One point that has not been mentioned: the success of TCP/IP owes a
great deal to its incorporation into Berkeley Unix, which was
also a DARPA product.
