It is a great feature, especially a couple of years ago, now with most
people having DSL it isn't that worthwhile, though it still has a great
value as you can use a slow line to transfer files between two
'highspeed' servers, or better said, not going over your slow line.
Generally people will call this FXP btw.
Most servers supporting it nicely have it disabled per default but one
can turn it on.
