fwiw, there was a bit of discussion of this on some place like
nanog some months back.  the part of the conclusion i remember
is
  o for the probing ip address, the source of the packets
  o when i look it up in the rir databases, e.g., 
       whois -h whois.arin.net
  o i should see a comment something like
       experiment in progress, see http://research.example.com/

that should keep the rir listed abuse contacts for your address
space from getting a lot of email.  they will still get the
occasional rabid self-righteous rant, but we all get those
anyway.

of course, you will need to negotiate this with your local
organization's network admins.  but you should be working with
them anyway, as they're the ones gonna be getting the email.
